Your Concrete Foundation Questions Answered
Concrete foundations are a load-bearing structure that holds a building upright and supports it. It also helps to keep groundwater out and acts as a barrier against water and soil vapor.
Concrete foundations come in three types:
- T-Shaped: T-shaped foundations are often used where the ground freezes. It sees a concrete footing laid underneath the frost line and the walls built on top. The footing is wider than the wall in order to provide extra support to the foundation. The T-shaped foundation is then put in and left to cure before the walls are constructed, and then the slab is poured.
- Slab-on-Grade/Monolithic Slab: This type of concrete foundation is used in areas that do not freeze. It involves a single layer of concrete that is thicker at the edges, with reinforcing rods strengthening the thickened edge. It can also be adapted with insulation if required.
- Frost protected: Frost protected foundations can only be used with heated structures. It uses polystyrene insulation on the base and foundation wall to prevent frost from forming on the ground, and the concrete is poured in one operation as opposed to the three required for T-shaped foundations.
To reduce the risk of concrete foundations cracking, we put in a base. This is a layer between the existing soil (the sub-grade) and the concrete slab. This base acts as a support to help reduce cracking risk.
