Essentially, it’s made using single-size aggregates with little to no fine particles (like sand) added. When we add the cement paste, it coats the aggregates and locks them together into a single substance. The absence of fine particles creates a structure with pores, which allows water to pass through to the ground below.
Although it may seem like the presence of pores would make permeable concrete weaker than its plain counterpart, be reassured that it’s just as strong. Remember that water can actually compromise the integrity of concrete over time, so allowing it to be drawn away from the surface actually makes the paving stronger.
When it rains on a traditional concrete surface, the water runs directly off into the stormwater system. In times of heavy rain, the system can quickly be overwhelmed and flooding can occur. Permeable concrete allows water to trickle down through the surface where it’s slowly and evenly released into the ground. Whilst some runoff will occur, it is significantly reduced.
